Lullaby of Birdland

November 4, 2007

One of the cool things about my place of work is that they give you a day off for your birthday. Nice.

My day off meant I was able to see my eldest daughter (five years old) in her school assembly. Each class takes it in turn to lead off and this was her class’s turn.

She loves it and we had a great time watching her and her lot sing “I can see clearly now the rain has gone” complete with actions.

But there was one kid, Steve, who fronted up to sing in the school’s talent competition.

Steve is tiny – he’s a real squirt – and he’s Fijian Indian and he looked so little and lonely on the stage with only his microphone for company and suddenly he began to sing with no accompaniment or anything and by the gods he can sing! He belted out some rock song or other and the whole place was gob-smacked. His teacher kept wiping wee tears of joy from her eyes and while I didn’t video it (and wouldn’t play it here without his OK anyway) it did remind me of this number with Robin Williams on Sesame Street from about a hundred years ago. Enjoy.
