The PM called him a “colossus” and I have to agree.
Interestingly, I found this story today as well:
Everest doubter dies
which in typical newspaper fashion is not at all terribly accurate.
“A Red Beach man who piloted an epic reconnaissance flight over the 8839-metre pinnacle of Everest – before advising Sir Edmund Hillary that the peak was unclimbable – has died at the age of 89.”
Is it just me or is there a nice symmetry about that?
I can see them both propping up a bar somewhere having a bit of a yarn about now.
I wrote about Sir Ed a while ago.
