Sir Ed

January 11, 2008

The PM called him a “colossus” and I have to agree.

Interestingly, I found this story today as well:

Everest doubter dies

which in typical newspaper fashion is not at all terribly accurate.

A Red Beach man who piloted an epic reconnaissance flight over the 8839-metre pinnacle of Everest – before advising Sir Edmund Hillary that the peak was unclimbable – has died at the age of 89.”

Is it just me or is there a nice symmetry about that?

I can see them both propping up a bar somewhere having a bit of a yarn about now.

I wrote about Sir Ed a while ago.

  1. Mysterious Dave Mather Says:

A good man, who had a bloody good innings all things considered.

New Zealand’s grief is probably more to do with the country now being short of a solid, larger-than-life man.
