Cop that

July 31, 2008

UK police are putting audio files of those idiots who call 999 to ask where they left their glasses on YouTube.

This is brilliant, on a number of levels.

Firstly, it reinforces the message that these numbers are for emergency calls only. Secondly, it’s amusing. Thirdly, it’s a great use of social media to get the message through.

Nice on all counts.

My employer is about to start charging some customers $1 to call us not because we’ll make money out of it (far from it) but because we get a hard core of customers who ring to ask questions like: how do I turn up the volume on my phone; how do I change my ring tone; what’s the time and so on. These people tie up resources that can’t be used for other things, like answering and sorting out problems that really do need a call centre rep’s attention.

Glad it’s not just us though.

Salmon Sandwiches. Seriously.

I’ve put off listening to this one for a while, sort of saving it up.

But, dialing the emergency number for help with your homework… pity the person that has to mark the results.

On the matter of waste of time calls to a call centre: a bloke I know, who worked in a call centre, once told me that he had been called by someone complaining that their cell phone didn’t work. Only after discussion did it come out that the phone was still in the box it came in, and had never been assembled.

Further, he got a call on that topic once every six months.
