What really impresses me though is the same thing that got me with Half Life – it’s the atmosphere.
Most people think of Quake when they think first person shooters (if they think of them at all). That’s fine, but the problem with Quake and indeed with most FPS is that they’re all about the guns. The guns get bigger, the bangs get louder (or stranger) and frankly it’s all a bit pointless.
Half Life changed that and it did it right from the opening sequence which set the tone. The train ride into Black Messa was as good as any movie opening sequence and the game lived up to it in so many ways. It was about character and fear and sneaking down a dark corridor with only two shells in your shotgun and nothing else and OMG SOMETHING JUMPS OUT AT YOU BLAM! BLAM! CLICK! GAH it’s just a head hugger.
It was, in other words, choice.
Now COD4 is delivering on the same promise – character. Not just the person you’re playing but the character of the places you go and the people you meet. I’m glad to see game designers paying this level of attention because I’m not 14 any more and haven’t been for quite some time. I want to think a bit, I want to be entertained and I’m not just interested in explosions any more.
On a side note, I realise I left one health point out of my list in the previous post. That would be the vasectomy. I may have to write more on that at a later date. I know, I’m drinking this afternoon… maybe that will be the perfect time!

I haven’t been a gamer for more than a year now. I don’t miss it. No, no I don’t.
The astute among you will realise that the link for HL2 is not HL2 but is in fact the uber-cool HL2 Portal. Insert drooling Homer sound here.
Eventually I moved on. I grew as a person and tackled Shogun and Medieval and then Rome: Total War and I realised something fairly fundamental: I am not a strategic commander of armies… instead I am a grunt.
And now Call of Duty 4 has come out and I’m missing out and for some reason that burns more than not being able to play Bioshock burns. Bah.
So here’s the trailer for COD4. Ain’t no fish in this one.
